I woke up this morning all fresh and rejuvenated (note the sarcasm) after having written the longest short essay of my life and promptly decided, while brushing my teeth (one of the single most inane practices of the human condition I might add) not to go to class. Yes, it is just one of those days when the factors of the universe, or the lack there of, weigh simply to the mass of school being wholly counter productive. I have scarcely felt that lecture has had any more function than to tear me away from my books, writing, or whatever other endeavors the hap of day throws my way. Oh I long for post grad when what I learn, or rather, what they try to teach me, hasn’t already been taught in grade school.
Here, I wish to ask you a question. When you were in university (if it can be said to be in the past tense) did they make you take “foundations” courses? The aforementioned term in this great northern land lightly translates to; assume all students are idiots due to lack of any remotely vigorous high school program or any such propensity to make kids actually responsible for their actions (what with blaming the system, parents, ADD, television, etc… to infinity and beyond, to quote my good friend Mr. Lightyear) and therefore, throughout first and second year, teach university students basic writing skills and grade 4 grammar. And so help me if it spills over into third year! It hurts me to think that Universities, at the undergrad level, are only about turning the buck thus accepting as many students as possible that meet the minimum grade requirement of a 60% average. This bleeding country has successfully turned the undergrad degree into the equivalent of what a high school education SHOULD be.
Could you imagine ever making it through first year, let alone getting into university, without being able to form a proper sentence, cite a consulted work, use a library or online resource? I’m sorry, but what this tells me is that university is over populated as a result of ill placed “progressive” Canadian idealism claiming a university degree now to be a right rather than something you earn. Yes, you and I well understand the nature and meaning of the word ‘earn’, but toss it to the ears of a Canadian politician or student (they are one and the same, I assure you) and it means “get everything, do nothing.”
This paragraph, aside from the words here mentioned, in utter frustration and anger, will solely be comprised of the following statement: FUCK!
